Evaluation and Repair of Three Severely Corroded Service Center Floors

A follow-on presentation to the discussion of our evaluation of over 1500 tire and lube facilities across the United States that prescribed immediate repairs where necessary, reinforcement where deterioration reduced capacity below acceptable levels and coatings necessary to protect structural steel and structural concrete (i.e. our 2019 Philadelphia presentation). This will be an in-depth presentation of how repairs were specified for (3) specific types of structures. The (3) structure types are exposed structural concrete, composite metal deck and fully reinforced form deck slabs all supported by steel structures and reinforced concrete walls. Presentation will include before, during and completion photos of each project discussed. Again, touch on the evaluation processes to include demand to capacity ratios review, evaluation system and inspection form, triggers to determine when shoring is necessary, calculation of capacities per AISC 360, ACI 318, ACI 562 and local building codes. Discuss how the repair specification that accounted for carbonation, ASR and corrosion of old reinforced concrete structures, guided the general contractor through the repair of the (3) projects.

  1. Determine demand to capacity ratios of the (10) structural systems evaluated
  2. Create evaluation system and inspection form to rate damage for repair prioritization
  3. Develop triggers to determine when immediate shoring or closure required per ACI 562
  4. Evaluations and calculations per AISC 360, ACI 318, ACI 562 and local building codes

Daniel Mazzei, Associate, Wallace Engineering, Inc

Dan Mazzei received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the Virginia Military Institute and his Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree from Mississippi State University. Dan began his career as a construction engineer for the U.S. Military and is now a licensed Professional Engineer in 12 states and Puerto Rico and a licensed Structural Engineer in Oklahoma. Dan has served as the project engineer and engineer of record for a variety of retail, education, industrial and municipal structures. Dan and his team have performed hundreds of forensic investigations and building assessments to include development of applicable repairs required for safe occupancy and code compliance. Dan is a member multiple, professional organizations.

Adam Logan, FORJAK Industrial

Adam Logan is the Owner/COO of FORJAK Industrial in Columbus, Ohio. During and after high school and a short stint of college, Adam decided to pursue business ownership for his career in the coatings and construction industry.  He has been self-employed since 2000 and has grown FORJAK into a 75-member company that services approximately half of the US.  Mr. holds a Concrete Coating Inspector license (CCI1) and a Protective Coating Inspector License (PCI2), both through SSPC. He believes in education and quality in the industry, and he’d rather be in the field working, than in an office.
